Introduction to the Temple of Portunus: The Temple of Portuno (Italian: Tempio di Portuno) is an ancient temple building dedicated to Portunus in Rome, Italy. It is located in the ancient Piazza del Duomo. Forum Boarium is located at a sharp bend of the Tiber River. The temple on the high platform overlooks the ships entering the port from Ostia.
The Temple of Portunus (Italian: Tempio di Portuno) was built in 75 BC. The building is rectangular, with a porch, and wall columns on both sides. It is located on a high platform and uses Ionian Column type; in 872, because the temple was converted into a church dedicated to the Virgin of Egypt (Santa Maria Egyziaca), its architecture has been well preserved; since the 16th century, paintings and sculptures have been added to its Ionic columns , has lost its original appearance of ancient Rome.
