Introduction to the Liyuan River: The Liyuan River is the mother river of Huai'an people. Broadly speaking, it refers to the section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal between the Yangtze River and the Huaihe River. However, in the minds of Huai'an people, the Liyuan River refers to Yangzhuang. This section of the ancient canal reaches Yunnan Gate. As early as the Spring and Autumn Period, the canals excavated in Yangzhou flowed here; in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the situation was unprecedented, and a large and specialized organization was set up to take charge of water transportation matters. In 1959, in order to meet the needs of shipping, the Grand Canal was cut and straightened. The section remaining in Huai'an City finally relieved its role of "water transportation" and became an inner city river, becoming today's Li Canal.
