Introduction to the American Painting and Sculpture Department: The first work acquired after the establishment of the American Painting and Sculpture Department—the allegorical sculpture made by Shearon Bowles purchased in 1870—" California" is still on display at the museum. After decades of hard work, the collection now contains as many as 1,000 paintings, 600 sculptures, and 2,600 drawings, covering works from the colonial period to the early 20th century, the most famous of which is "Washington Crossing the Delaware."
