Introduction to the North Building: The North Building, built in 1911, is a five-bay, two-story Chinese-style building. It was originally used as a display of epigraphy, calligraphy and painting. Later, in addition to whale skeletons, it also displayed bone specimens and fossils of many other animals collected in the garden. The upstairs displayed calligraphy and painting by famous artists from Tong, Ru, Tai and Hai. The most famous one is a long landscape scroll more than 10 meters long made by Qian Shu, a Nantong painter in the Qing Dynasty.
