Introduction to Jackson Square: Jackson Square is the hinterland of the French Quarter. Most of the buildings are a mixture of French and Spanish styles. It was renamed after the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. The square is surrounded by Decatur Street, St. Peter Street, St. Anne Street and Chartres Street. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960. The square is flanked by four-story red brick buildings built in the 1840s, with shops and restaurants on the ground floor and the oldest continuously rented apartments in North America on the upper floors. On the southwest side of the square is the Jackson Brewery, and on the southeast side is the 24-hour Café du Monde, famous for its milk coffee.
