Introduction to the Grand Palace Gate of the Old Summer Palace: The seven main halls in the Grand Palace Gate of the Old Summer Palace are inscribed with the words "upright and bright". They were the official offices where the emperor held court meetings and received foreign envoys in the garden. Its functions are similar to the Hall of Supreme Harmony and the Hall of Baohe in the Forbidden City. It was built in 1725 (the third year of Yongzheng reign). In 1793 (the fifty-eighth year of Qianlong's reign), the British envoy George Macartney (1737-1806) visited China, and the gifts brought by the British King to celebrate Emperor Qianlong's birthday were displayed in this hall. When the British and French forces ravaged the Old Summer Palace in October 1860, this palace served as the temporary headquarters of the leaders of the invasion of China, and was subsequently set on fire.
