Introduction to the Palace of Justice: The Palace of Justice to the north of the square is particularly eye-catching. In 1963, the most famous political trial in South African history was held here. That year, Mandela and other South African anti-apartheid fighters were charged with treason here and sentenced to life imprisonment. Today, this historic building with its corner tower is the seat of the Supreme Court of the Gauteng Province of South Africa.
