The cathedral was originally a rectangular Romanesque church. It was severely damaged by fire in 1598. The then Archbishop Wolf Dietrich was determined to rebuild it into a cathedral comparable to St. Peter's Church in Rome and handed it over to the Designed by Italian architect Santino Solari, the project laid the foundation stone in 1614 and was not completed until 1665.
The church is 466 feet long and 109 feet high. The facade decorated with pink Wintersberg marble is beautiful and well-proportioned, just in proportion to its wide interior space.
