Introduction to Salzburg Fortress: Hohensalzburg Fortress (German: Festung Hohensalzburg) is located on the Monk Hill (Moenchsberg) more than 100 meters above sea level in the old town of Salzburg. The bishop's residence and one of the largest medieval castles in Europe is considered an icon of the city of Salzburg.
The initial construction of the fortress can be traced back to the investiture dispute. At that time, there was a competition between the pope and the king for the power to appoint bishops. In 1077, Bishop Geberhard of Salzburg, who was loyal to the pope, established a project on his territory. The construction of defensive buildings began, and was gradually expanded by successive archbishops, and was finally completed under the leadership of Conrad I (1160-1147).
The fortress completely inherited the style of a Central European castle. It is surrounded by high and thick city walls, 250 meters long and 150 meters wide. It has a very large area. On the streets in the city, there are halls, concert halls, bishop's chambers, etc. where the archbishop holds grand religious ceremonies. There are many buildings and courtyards such as the Armory Hall, the Prison Hall, and the Medieval Torture Instruments Exhibition Hall.
There is a water tank built in 1539 in the main courtyard of the castle. An old orange tree standing beside the water tank has a history of nearly 350 years; the Golden Hall in the ceremonial hall has luxurious interiors, where you can see gilded wood carvings and ornate The Italian faience fireplace; the museum displays medieval art treasures, which amaze visitors; in addition, you can also see the torture chamber, prison and the human-controlled mechanical organ known as the "Salzburg Steer" (1502 ), Mozart's father composed a hymn for this organ.
The castle's cargo cable car built in 1515 may be the oldest cable car in the world; now the castle's transportation has been modernized and is all connected by aerial cable cars. It takes ten minutes to climb the castle by cable car. It is worth visiting the castle. Hike down the mountain trail.
