Introduction to the chanting altar: The chanting altar is an essential part of the synagogue and consists of the tabernacle, the chanting platform, and the ark of the covenant. The tabernacle was a gift from the Israeli Consulate General in Shanghai and is regarded as a symbol of the Jewish nation. The lectern is slightly higher than the ground to show its importance, but it is slightly lower than the Ark of the Covenant, which is the most sacred in the synagogue. During the ceremony, the leader reads excerpts from the Torah or Haftarah.
