Introduction to St. John's University: St. John's University is a famous church university in modern China, formerly known as St. John's College. It is now the seat of East China University of Political Science and Law, located on Wanhangdu Road. In 1879, Bishop Joseph Schiff of Shanghai of the American Episcopal Church merged Pei Ya Academy and Doen Academy, formerly under the Anglican Church, and established St. John's Academy on the land purchased at Vatican Ferry in the west of Shanghai. In 1884, the school received a huge grant from Ms. Clarkson of New York, USA, and built a church. It was a two-story building with a mixture of Chinese and Western styles. The exterior was red brick and used some decorative elements from Western architecture. In the late 1980s, the church was demolished and converted into the library of East China University of Political Science and Law. In 1894, a Chinese-style education building was built in memory of the founder, Bishop Joseph Shi, and was named "Huai Shi Hall". In the early 1990s, it was renamed "Taofen Building". In 1903, St. John's University built the "Siyan Hall" to commemorate the Chinese pastor Mr. Yan Yongjing. In 1906, the school was registered in the United States and was officially called St. John's University. Registered with the National Government in 1947. In 1952, it was merged into other universities in Shanghai during the restructuring of colleges and universities across the country.
