Introduction to the Hermitage: The Hermitage (Эрмитаж) is transliterated into the Hermitage Museum. Located on Palace Square in St. Petersburg, it was originally the royal palace of the Russian Czar. After the October Revolution, it became part of the St. Petersburg State Hermitage Museum. It is an outstanding example of Russian Baroque architecture in the mid-18th century. The Hermitage, together with the British Museum in London, the Louvre in Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is known as the four major museums in the world.
