Road introduction: Monks in the 12th century built early roads in addition to building terraces. To this day, local houses and roads still maintain the medieval style. In 1536, the Bernese took control of Lavaux. While the wealthy people from Bern obtained land, they also greatly improved the local roads. In 1849, the Vaud cantonal parliament agreed to widen the lakeside road from Lausanne to Vevey along Lake Geneva. In 1861, the road and railway were connected.
