Introduction to Beiyang University: Beiyang University is the first university in modern history in China, founded in 1895. Sheng Xuanhuai, the founder of Beiyang University, once vigorously assisted Li Hongzhang in developing the Westernization Movement in Tianjin. In the practice of the Westernization Movement, he felt that "the first step in self-improvement is to cultivate talents, and to cultivate talents, we must first establish schools." So after taking office as Tianjin Customs Road in 1892, preparations for running a school began. Today, the Western-style school gates still remain on the Tianjin University campus.
