Introduction to Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves: Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves are located at the foot of the Flame Mountain, 45 kilometers east of Turpan City, on the cliff on the west bank of Mutou Valley. There are 83 caves carved out of them, 57 of which are extant. Among them, there are more than 40 murals with a total area of 1,200 square meters. It is the grotto group with the largest number of caves and the richest mural content among the existing grottoes in Turpan. It is also one of the larger Buddhist cave temple sites in Xinjiang. Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves has experienced the process of formation-prosperity-decline. Cave 17 and Cave 18 were excavated in the late Southern and Northern Dynasties between the 6th and 7th centuries AD. Cave No. 16 was dug in the mid-Tang Dynasty. The mural in Cave No. 20 depicts the image of the Uighur King and Queen of Gaochang. On the back wall of Cave 33, there is a painting showing the disciples standing silently in mourning after the Buddha's Nirvana. Cave 38 is a cave that reflects the life of ancient Manichaeism. Cave No. 51 was built during the Gaochang period of the Uighurs. Cave 69 is the cave within the cave of Cave No. 20. Cave Nos. 82 and 83 are small memorial caves specially built for eminent monks of Buddhist temples during the period when the Gaochang Uighur Kingdom was powerful in the 10th and 11th centuries AD.
Transportation information:
1. Taxi: A round trip to Xiali (one hour stay) is about 80 yuan/car. One-way delivery from Xiali to Thousand Buddha Cave is about 50 yuan/car.
2. Bus: Take the shuttle bus from Turpan to Shanshan or Sanbao Township from Turpan Passenger Terminal, get off at Shengjinkou, transfer to a local passenger tricycle or take a ride to Thousand Buddha Cave ( Turpan wins 5 yuan/person for Jinkou and 6 yuan/car for Jinkou Thousand Buddha Caves).
