Mermaid sculpture introduction: The city emblem of Warsaw is symbolized by a mermaid holding a shield in her left hand and a sword in her right hand. She is not only a symbol of Warsaw, but also considered the patron saint of Warsaw.
There are two bronze mermaid statues in Warsaw. The bronze mermaid statue located in the Old City Market was built in 1855 and is the first bronze statue of mermaid in Warsaw. The bronze statue of mermaid standing on the bank of the Vistula River was built by a famous Polish woman. The sculptor Ludwika Niteshova created it in 1934 using the Polish heroine Stu Helska as a model. It was just completed in 1937. It is much larger than the first bronze statue and has a more graceful posture. During Hitler's German occupation of Poland, the bronze statue of the Mermaid quietly disappeared and did not reappear until Poland was liberated. It turned out that before the invasion of the German fascist army, people dismantled and buried the bronze statue and carefully protected it. After the founding of the Polish People's Republic, people re-erected her on the Vistula River.
