During the Anti-Japanese War, he contacted Chen Mingshu, Jiang Guangnai, Cai Tingkai, Zhu Yunshan, Mei Gongbin, Chen Xizhou, Xuan Xiafu and others from the Kuomintang and the Communist Party and the cultural circle to discuss anti-Japanese matters behind enemy lines. In 1944, he accepted Zhou Enlai's suggestion to return to his old residence to organize popular armed forces, and organized the "Southern District Anti-Japanese Committee" here with a group of patriotic cultural figures sent by Dong Biwu to carry out resistance against Japan behind enemy lines and maintain telecommunications connections with Yan'an.
