Introduction to the Patriarch Hall: There is the Patriarch Hall in the west courtyard of the Main Hall. On the front of the hall hang the portraits of the three masters Tan Luan, Dao Chuo and Shan Dao. These three portraits were presented to a Buddhist delegation headed by Japanese Elders Sugawara Ekei and Takashi Rongzan when they visited Xuanzhong Temple on September 18, 1957. They were donated by Chion-in Temple, Zojo-ji Temple and Shinshu Honjo, the headquarters of the Jodo Sect of Japan. Temple and Higashi Honganji Temple were drawn separately. A pair of exquisite banners hangs in front of the Buddhist niche, which were presented by the Japanese Pure Land Sect in 1980 to commemorate the 1,300th anniversary of Master Shandao's death when he came to China to pay homage to his ancestors. The ancestral hall also displays scriptures, religious objects, photos and other gifts presented by the Japanese Buddhist community.
