Introduction to Shi'en Hall: The first courtyard into the inner house is Shangfang Courtyard, also known as "Shi'en Hall", which is the residence of Dr. Hanlin, a direct descendant of Mencius. This is a typical Chinese courtyard building. In the north of the courtyard is the main hall, which is the "Shi'en Hall" with carved beams and painted pillars, gorgeous paintings, three bright and five dark ones, and cloisters in the front and back. There is a huge regular script plaque of "Shi'en Hall" hanging directly above it.
