Sanya on Hainan Island is a mature tourist destination and is very commercialized. There are countless five-star hotels, scenic spots, entertainment and restaurants.

You can drive around Hainan Island by yourself, you can stay in a hotel for the entire trip, or you can stay in a B&B and cook seafood.

For this New Year’s Day trip, air tickets and hotels were relatively expensive, so we chose to fly to Haikou. We rented a car in Haikou along the South Ring Expressway, passing through Shimei Bay and Qingshui Bay, all the way to Sanya.

1. Stay in Clearwater Bay at "Hainan Clearwater Bay Aloha Love Ocean View Suites Resort Hotel" . The hotel is very good. It is an apartment-style hotel with a kitchen where you can make some simple meals. The hotel has multiple restaurants, a cinema and a Zoo. Cafe, you can reach the beach through the swimming pool. The hotel has a shuttle bus, which is more convenient by driving. There is a commercial street where you can eat in 3 minutes' drive.

Sanya

1. Stay in a B&B near the First Market in Sanya City – Hongzhou Champs Elysees Left Bank, No. 4 Jiefang Road, Sanya City (a multi-room B&B booked on airbnb). It takes a 5-minute walk from the B&B to the First Market and a 3-minute walk to a large supermarket. I live in Sanya mainly because it is convenient to buy seafood, and the driving distance to various scenic spots is almost the same.

2. Choose a scenic spot to visit in Sanya every day, and then buy seafood to cook.

I went to 3 scenic spots, Wuzhizhou Island/Tianya Haijiao/Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park. There were many people and the tickets were very expensive. If you don’t like visiting scenic spots very much, you don’t need to go there at all.

The First Market in Sanya is a holy place for buying seafood. It is full of tourists. At the entrance of the First Market is a row of stalls and shops that process seafood. Online introductions say that if you go to the first market to buy seafood and then find a place to process it, you can first find a processing point and let the people who process the food stalls take it with you to buy seafood, and you will be better off.

For the situation where you only have enough to buy seafood and go back to cook it yourself:

1. On the first day, we went to the First Market (No. 155, Xinjian Street, Tianya District, Sanya City (near Xinmin Road)). We walked around first and asked about the prices. They were not cheap. I found a few that seemed promising and started asking about the prices. I introduced myself first and said that I was coming to Sanya for a month and would live in a community nearby. If the price is cheaper, we will come to you every day to buy it.

2. The price on holidays is much more expensive than on weekdays. For example, the price of Da Qinglong on New Year’s Day is 280/catty, on January 2nd it is 260/catty, and on January 4th it is 200/catty.

3. In addition to the first market, the B&B owner also introduced the largest wholesale market in Sanya - Honggang Xinmao City (we did not go there due to the distance), which mainly sells fruits and vegetables, and also sells seafood in the morning. The price of seafood is cheaper than the first market. The address is: Xinhonggang Fruit Wholesale Market, Jiyang District (near the intersection of Yuya Road and Yingbin Road, Jiyang District, Sanya City).
