Guangtou Mountain, also known as Wheat Straw Mountain, is located on the west side of the Qinling Mountains watershed in Fengyu Pass, with an altitude of 2,903 meters. It is the sixth highest peak in the Qinling Mountains in Shaanxi and the highest altitude in Chang'an District, Xi'an.
The altitude is high, the temperature is low, there are no trees on the mountain, and weeds are luxuriant, so it is commonly known as "Bald Mountain". There is a Shaanxi TV FM transmitting station built on it, and there is a dirt road to go up. The top of Guangtou Mountain is covered with alpine rhododendrons, alpine firs and other low shrubs and alpine meadows. The view is extremely broad. Looking north from the top of the mountain is the Guanzhong Plain. The famous Qinling peaks Taibai Mountain, Bingjingding and Lujiaoliang can all be seen in the distance. .
There are two regular routes up Guangtou Mountain. Generally, travelers take the Jiwozi Haogou Road, which can lead directly to the top of Guangtou Mountain. If you go this way, the vertical elevation is about 1,100 meters. The intensity is not small, and certainly not very high. For novices, it may be a little more difficult. Now for me, it is not difficult at all. If you leave early in the morning, you will usually have no problem returning on the same day.
The other one is at the top of the watershed of National Highway 210. There is a sign here that says "Qinling Top". Going down the mountain from here is Guanghuo Street, entering Ankang in southern Shaanxi. There is a locked gate on the west side of the road. Inside the gate, there is a forest road that can continue up to the forest farm. It winds for more than ten kilometers to the top of the mountain, and you can reach the top of Bald Mountain. This forest farm road is also the only way to pass through the Shangri-La Temple in the Qinling Mountains.
Speaking of mountain climbing, Bald Mountain is probably the mountain that got me into trouble. I have been to Jiawu Terrace with many groups before, and this is the first time I have been with a group, and it has only been that time so far. Because the stitches had just been removed from a broken arm, it didn't reach the top. I also went to play in front of the scenic spot. At that time, I didn’t have much yearning for outdoor mountain climbing. I just loved to play.
The second and third time I rode to Guifeng Mountain and the Big and Small Mountain Crossings, I didn’t reach the top because of the long riding distance. I wandered around halfway up the mountain and evacuated the scene. Taking a closer look, apart from the scenic area, I have only climbed these few mountains before Bald Mountain, and none of them reached the top.
Guangtou Mountain has been successfully climbed to the top three times. The first time was the original return, and the second and third times were U-shaped crossings. On the Jiwozi Toad Valley, the forest farm road comes out of the watershed. There were no articles on the first two times so I didn’t record much. This time I finally had the opportunity to go to Bald Mountain again. I have the opportunity to record the first two travels together; especially the first time I hiked Bald Mountain, I have some memories and some writing. Brother, this is the first real mountain in my mountain climbing career. It has the most beautiful scenery and is also the most dangerous and unforgettable hiking trip.
I have heard about Bald Mountain more than once or twice before. I also have an inexplicable yearning for Bald Mountain. After the epidemic eased, I came to Xi'an. I was bored, so I cycled on my first true wild mountain trip - Guangtou Mountain.
Not only was it my first time climbing a wild mountain, it was also my first time camping on the top of a mountain. Riding a bicycle, carrying a tent, sleeping bag, moisture-proof mat, food and drink, with no experience and no knowledge of the mountaineering route, I rode along the 210 National Highway to the 36th house of Fenshuiling Chicken Nest, and arrived at Denggangtou Mountain Toad Valley climbing ditch entrance
To be honest, when I was riding almost to the chicken coop, the more I rode, the more scared I became. I was afraid of taking the wrong road, afraid that I was not strong enough to go up, afraid that the weather on the top of the mountain would change beyond my imagination, and afraid of everything. So I temporarily asked in a hiking group if anyone wanted to join us. The result was as you might imagine, not only did someone agree to my request, but they also bought wine and brought gas tanks and stoves (this was also my first time coming into contact with outdoor gas tanks, pots, and stoves). Thanks to him coming, I think it would have been much worse if I was alone at the top of the mountain.
It started to rain vaguely after we arrived at the Hahaogou trailhead. Seeing that the rain was not heavy, the two of us bit the bullet and went up. The rain got heavier as we walked higher. As we continued to climb higher, even though it said it wouldn't rain anymore, it started raining. It's snowing heavily. The further we walk, the snowier and heavier it gets.
As for me, since it was my first time to climb a wild mountain, I was inexperienced and a novice. The equipment was very poor and I didn't have any, so I went camping on the top of Guangtou Mountain, the highest peak in Chang'an, on a snowy day. Wearing a pair of white skate shoes, specially designed for slipping and wrestling, what do you think about a snowy day? In fact, going up the mountain was fine, but it was too slippery to walk up. It's okay to spend some time and be careful on some dangerous sections.
Wearing white shoes down the mountain really made me miserable and regretful. It snowed heavily on the first day, and the snow on the top of the mountain was more than 20 centimeters thick. On the second day, the sun was 15 degrees high, and the snow completely melted. Unlike the scenic spots, the wild mountains have stone roads or cement roads. It was all a dirt road, so there was mud all the way. I was heavily loaded and wearing white shoes when I went down the mountain. You can imagine the consequences. I fell a dozen times. It almost made me never go hiking outdoors again. If it were someone else, they might never dare to go to the wild mountains again, right? But my brother and I really fell into the trap from this time, and I couldn't control it anymore. It was like being addicted to drugs, and I was trapped in the outdoor circle and could never get out again.
It was very dark after reaching the top. Maybe it was due to my luck. At this time, the sky on the top of the mountain was no longer snowing, but instead it was clear and cloudless, and the sun was setting in the west. Since it had just snowed heavily, the air quality was particularly good, with no pollution at all; and after night, it was as expected. We came out to see the starry sky. Even though we have climbed mountains and camped enough times these days, the starry sky has become normal to us. It was much more beautiful than the starry sky that day! But the starry sky that day was indeed the first time I encountered such a beautiful starry sky in Shaanxi. It was freezing at night, but I kept taking photos outside the tent.
When we camped at night, there was actually a red house up there. Further ahead, there was not only a large yard, but also an empty house, which was well-sheltered from the wind. But because my teammates said that camping at the pass has a soul, we camped on the mountainside less than fifty meters away from the top of the mountain, where the snow was more than twenty centimeters thick.
When I first arrived at the top of the mountain, it got dark, and the snow on the ground was super thick, so the temperature immediately dropped. And because I was wearing white shoes, my shoes were soaked through. I immediately felt uncomfortable and shivered from the cold. Fortunately, my teammates brought gas tanks, pots, and stoves, heated hot water, dried socks and shoes, and warmed their frozen feet and hands. So as I said before, without him as a friend, I think my situation would be much worse. This is why I was willing to buy outdoor tableware as soon as I came back. Although I am not a strong donkey, all outdoor novices are like this, little by little, they practice to be strong donkeys time and time again, and then become great masters, right? I gained experience little by little. I think I won’t let myself be in such a situation again in the future.
A 200-yuan tent and a 300-yuan sleeping bag were just the equipment, but I pitched the tent at the pass; in the strong wind one night, my poor equipment couldn’t bear it, and the roof of the tent stuck to my body all night. I felt like I was being pushed forward. I was worried that I would be blown off the mountain, and that the tent would not be able to hold up and the frame would break, so I had to go out in the middle of the night to pack up the tent and squeeze in a friend's tent to cope with it; relatively speaking, the quality of my friend's tent was indeed much better. , almost unaffected by wind. When I came out to close the tent, people came out and moved all the things to the next door. They grabbed the tent with one hand and started to close it with the other hand. However, the wind blew the entire tent in the air. Fortunately, I had one hand to grab it. Otherwise the tent would really fly!
On the first day and the whole night, I didn’t meet any fellow travellers; before I even got up in the morning, someone had already climbed up the mountain and set out in the middle of the night to see the sunrise and the sea of clouds, thinking that it snowed yesterday and the sea of clouds is stable today. It is stable, but unfortunately, the sky is not as expected, the sky is clear, cloudless, and there is only the red sun. And because they were a step too late, they didn’t see the sunrise either! But my brother and I were different. Because we were at the top of the mountain, I took out my phone to take time-lapse photography and recorded the video myself. I went back to the tent to catch up on my sleep. I almost didn't sleep all night, so I couldn't make up for it!
There is not much left to say about the rest of the day. We took photos, played around, checked in the famous rock, and returned to the original route on the dirt road. After falling more than a dozen times and reaching the bottom of the mountain, the first wild mountain experience was basically over. Oh, by the way, on the way down the mountain, the travel companion who came up in the middle of the night helped me all the way down the mountain and waited for me, so that I would not be anxious and fall more. Fortunately, when we were approaching the top of the mountain, heavy snow began to fall near the arrow bamboo forest. Although it couldn't fall, it was really not small. It also fulfilled many people's wish to see the first snow in October 2020. Since Guangtou Mountain is the highest peak in Chang'an, the probability of encountering snow here is very high. It is the best place to climb the mountain to enjoy the snow.
This trip to Bald Mountain was the earliest of the three times I got up and set off. I got up at 5 a.m. and started climbing at 8:30.
