Is there a city you can never forget?

The city of Dresden, located on the banks of the Elbe River in eastern Germany, intertwined a memory that I will never forget in my life that summer.

In May 2018, at Changshui Airport, when I crossed the security gate with a ticket from Beijing to Frankfurt in my hand, I remembered that my friend once said that after May, Europe enters the most beautiful season. I am so lucky. In the most beautiful season, you can travel across the ocean and encounter unknown scenery.

After an 11-hour flight from Beijing to Frankfurt, it took another 1 hour to transfer from Frankfurt to Dresden. After a long journey, we finally arrived in this city surrounded by green trees. My first impression of this city was the greenery. The houses seemed to be growing out of the forest. As the car passed by the Elbe River, countless exquisite and magnificent Baroque buildings appeared in front of us, and the fatigue of the journey disappeared in an instant. How can the heart that longs to see the world not be fascinated by it?

In February 1945, the city of Dresden was severely bombed by the Allied forces. Many exquisite buildings were destroyed. The city's landmark Frauenkirche was destroyed in the war, leaving only a 13-meter-high fragment of the wall. This was a sign of the war. Eternal pain for the people of Dresden. After the reunification of Germany, with the support of donations from Britain, the United States and other countries, Germany took 11 years to rebuild and spent 179 million euros. The rebuilt church was basically built as it was, and many relics were carefully preserved and became part of the raw materials for church construction. Regardless of whether the rebuilt church can heal the pain in people's hearts, we can see hope for the future from people's reflection on war and yearning for peace during the reconstruction of Dresden's Frauenkirche.
