Travel Notes – Magic City (Part 2)

Speaking of Shanghai, the first thing people think of is the bustling Bund, the neon-colored Oriental Pearl Tower, the eye-catching high-rise buildings and the high-speed pace of life.

However, to experience the true charm of Shanghai, you still have to go to these treasure little streets hidden in the city center.

Come and check in with Xixi~

01

Maoming South Road

Maoming South Road, originally a farmland, was built in 1914 and has a history of 105 years. It is located in the northwest of the former Luwan District. It starts from Yan'an Middle Road in the north and ends at Yongjia Road in the south, with a total length of 1,275 meters. It was built in 1919 and named after the Belgian bishop. In the 32nd year of the Republic of China, it was renamed Guilin Road after the place in Guangxi. In the 35th year of the Republic of China, the name was changed to Maoming, Guangdong.

It only takes about 15 minutes to complete the walk. But it is not easy to explore it in detail. For example, it is difficult to find the Chinachem (Mao) apartment where Zhang Ailing lived, because it is not even marked on the map.

Check-in location 1. Shanghai style cheongsam store

If a graceful woman wearing a cheongsam appears in front of you, believe me, your eyes will always light up. Just like when Hu Lancheng saw Zhang Ailing, he just wanted to "The years will be peaceful and the world will be stable". Girls who dream of cheongsam highly recommend choosing a dress at the cheongsam store on Maoming South Road~

Check-in location 2. Lyceum Grand Theater

During the week, the Lyceum Theater is closed only on Sundays, and this has been the case for nearly a hundred years. But as time goes by, the stage and light chasing have long been replaced by curtains and projectors. A form of performance in which the audience and actors come into face-to-face contact, from today’s perspective, can only be regarded as a kind of remembrance of the past, right?

02

Anfu Road

Anfu Road is 862 meters long. Built in 1915-1916, it was named Dupleix Route after the French general. It was renamed Anfu Road in 1943. Anfu Road is only 862 meters from beginning to end, but when you walk it in person, you feel like you have experienced a sensory journey of sight, taste, smell and touch! The sycamore trees full of French style along the road, Shanghai alleys marked by time, and all kinds of exquisite old bungalows are all unique scenery on this road.

Check-in location 1. RAC Bar&Coffee

No matter what time of day, a good morning must start with a perfect brunch. In this long-established "internet green" RAC Bar&Coffee, which integrates restaurant + BAR + coffee, you can find a comfortable location and satisfy your taste buds' demands for delicious food.

Check-in location 2. IG coffee

It is more of a complex art space than a cafe. There are three floors inside, each with a different theme about photography, attracting camera enthusiasts from all walks of life.

Check-in location 3. Xiaohua Western Antique Shop

Vintage enthusiasts were instantly star-struck when they saw this store✨ Anyway, Xixi couldn't help it👀 When she walked in, every corner was full of surprises🌟The store is dazzlingly decorated, and there are all kinds of groceries, large and small. This Western antique store specializes in Western antiques, dolls, tableware, groceries, etc. The only drawback is that the price is slightly high.

03

Yuyuan Road

The road expansion of Yuyuan Road was completed in 1918, which is 100 years ago. Over the past 100 years, heroes and intellectuals have come to Shanghai and left their stories here. And Yuyuan Road, because of its important geographical location, stirs up many legendary stories: it has the footprints of the red revolution and the democratic movement; it has the past of spy wars, and it also has the presence of many literati. Many historical events can be found on Yuyuan Road.

Check-in location 1. Fuchun Xiaolong (Yuyuan Road store)

As a native of Shanghai, Xixi will always miss Xiaolong! This shop not only offers small steamed buns, wontons, and noodles, but also a variety of local Shanghainese dishes, so you can have breakfast, lunch, and dinner! The Xiaolong is also thin and juicy, but the most recommended one is this restaurant’s spicy pork noodles! Their bacon toppings are all refined meat, stir-fried in oil, which is different from other bacon restaurants!

Check-in location 2. Market Alley

There are many lanes in Shanghai, but there are only a few that are as historical and well preserved as this one. For example, Hengchang Lane decorated in verandah style, Jiu'anfang built in 1910, Jiandefang where the founder of the Tongmenghui He Suili and his son once lived, and the pioneering work in Shanghai's new-style lane residences Yongquanfang of sexual status and more!

👣 👣 👣 👣 👣 👣

There are people we have met hidden in each of us,

The books I’ve read, the roads I’ve traveled.

Shanghai is where Xixi and I grew up.

It carries all my emotions.
