Since Nan'ao Island is located on the southeastern coast, between eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian, it is an important military location. The feudal rulers were afraid of having troops here to respect themselves, so the small island was jointly managed by Guangdong and Fujian. In the middle, Xiongzhen Pass serves as the dividing line.
Sea bans were very strict during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The more severe the imperial restrictions, the more rampant private smuggling activities became. Coupled with the intrusion of Japanese pirates outside and pirates entrenched inside, more and more soldiers were stationed by the imperial court, and the standards of Nan'ao were gradually upgraded, eventually becoming an important military base for controlling Fujian, Guangdong and Taiwan.

Xiongzhen Pass is located on the ridge at the junction of Yun'ao and Shen'ao. It was built in the 13th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty. It was the ancient pass hub of the two ancient towns of Yun'ao and Shen'ao.
According to the "Nan'ao Chronicles" of the Qing Dynasty: "Qi Jiguang broke the Wu Ping Road because of this", which illustrates the historical significance of building a pass here and its important role in guarding Nan'ao and consolidating coastal defense. Changshanwei Fort was built in the 56th year of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1717). It is a pair of "sister forts" with Dalaiwu Fort in Chenghai. They face each other and jointly guard the safety of Changshanwei Yang. Climbing the city and looking into the distance, you can have a panoramic view of Laiwu Mountain on the other side and Fengyu Island in the northwest sea.
The city corridor is rectangular, 60 meters long, 20 meters wide, 6 meters high, and the wall is 2 meters thick. The existing city gate is constructed of stone strips about 3 meters high and 2 meters wide.
There are steps against the south and north walls to climb up the city, and there is a tall platform to the west for placing cannons. Climbing the city and looking into the distance, you can have a panoramic view of Laiwu Mountain on the other side and Fengyu Island in the northwest sea.

 

 

Soldiers Cemetery

 

Nan'ao is the island county closest to Taiwan in Guangdong. It has historically been an important coastal defense military town. In addition to guarding the main island, the officers and soldiers guarding Nan'ao are also responsible for military affairs in the coastal areas of eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian and in Penghu and Tamsui, Taiwan. Most of these officers and soldiers who were responsible for the glorious mission of defending the motherland were buried on the spot after being killed in battle or in the line of duty, and their ashes were moved back to South Australia a few years later.
In 1993, Nan'ao County allocated special funds to move the scattered tombs of deceased soldiers and build a cemetery together. The renovated cemetery covers an area of ​​more than 1,000 square meters. 199 officers and soldiers of the Qing Dynasty who died in the garrison are buried under the three-dimensional characters "Loyal Soul". Ancient City Park is located on the south side of Shen'ao Ancient Town in the northeastern part of Nan'ao Island. It was the seat of ancient Nan'ao City, an important coastal defense town in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and an important link on the Maritime Silk Road. The ancient city wall is the only Ming Dynasty city wall that remains in Nan'ao City, recording Nan'ao's important historical value in coastal defense.

Shitan Temple is located on the hill next to the Longchang Coastal Cement Road in the western half of the island. It is commonly known as "Qian'ao Temple". Shitan Temple has a winding path to the north, stacked stone barriers, and ancient banyan trees. The scenery is unique.

The Nan'ao City God's Temple is located in Shenn'ao Town, Nan'ao County, a few hundred meters behind the Fujian and Guangdong General Military Mansion. The City God's Temple was built in the fourth year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty and is a Sanjin building.
The Confucius Temple and the City God Temple are next to each other, with the same entrance and exit. The original Confucius Temple collapsed during the earthquake in South Australia. It is said that the Confucius Temple was very large and is now Shen'ao Middle School. It was only more than ten years ago that the people of South Australia worshiped Confucius again.
