Introduction to Wanghailou: Tianjin Wanghailou Church, formerly known as Our Lady of Victory Church, was built at the end of 1859. In the summer of 1870, 30 to 40 children in the Mercy Church, which was just across the river from Wanghailou Church, were tortured to death due to the abuse by French missionaries and nuns (but this proved to be completely untrue) and the epidemic. . At that time, there were several child abduction incidents in Tianjin. After the criminals were caught, they all confessed to being instigated by the parishioners of Wanghailou Church (it was eventually found out that this was a false accusation). Afterwards, the academies began to suspend classes, the gentry held gatherings one after another, and anti-foreign religious posters quickly filled the streets. On June 21, thousands of people demonstrated in front of Wanghailou Church. The French consul Feng Daye and his secretary Simon clashed with Liu Jie, the magistrate of Tianjin, and injured Liu Jie's entourage. The crowd present beat Feng Daye and Simon to death on the spot. Immediately afterwards, they blared gongs and gathered people to flock to Wanghailou Church, beating Xie Fu and more than 30 other priests and nuns to death, and setting fire to Wanghailou Church, the French Consulate, and the Mercy Hall. This is the famous "Tianjin Teaching Case".
