Almaty (Alma-ata) is the old capital of Kazakhstan, the largest city in the country, and the country's main commercial center. It is located in the hilly area at the foot of the Alai Mountains (called Waiyili Mountains in China) in the southeastern part of Kazakhstan and at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides. It is a tourist city with unique scenery. It is famous for its rich apples, and its name also means Apple City.
