Xuanwumen Catholic Church, commonly known as the South Church, is located at No. 141 Qianmen West Street, Xicheng District, Beijing, China. It is the earliest Catholic church in Beijing. It was first built in 1605. The existing building was built in 1904. It is a three-story Baroque building. The Nantang is the oldest church in Beijing. It was built by the Italian missionary Matteo Ricci in the 33rd year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty. The early Nantang was called the Xuanwumen Chapel and was very small in scale. In the seventh year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty, under the auspices of the German Jesuit missionary Tang Ruowang, the renovation project of the Catholic Church began on the original site of the Xuanwumen Chapel. Two years later, a cathedral was built.
