Dalian University of Technology was founded in April 1949. It is the first formal institution of higher learning established by the People's Republic of China. The current location is located in the High-tech Zone and Xigang District of Dalian City, Liaoning Province, China. The Software College is located in the Dalian Economic and Technological Development Zone. It is a vice-ministerial university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. It is a key construction university of China's 111 Project, 211 Project and 985 Project.

The school covers an area of 3.03 million square meters (4550 acres), of which the main campus (Ganjingzi Campus) is 2.114 million square meters (3171 acres), the School of Chemical Engineering campus is 106,000 square meters (159 acres), and the Development Zone Campus is 813,000 square meters ( 1220 acres).
