Qiongtai Academy was founded in the 44th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign (1705 AD) in the Qing Dynasty. It was the highest institution of learning in Qiongzhou during the Qing Dynasty. It was said that it was built in memory of Qiu Jun, the first talent in Hainan and a university scholar in the Ming Dynasty. It is said that Qiu Jun was named Qiongtai and was called Mr. Qiongtai, so the academy got its name from this. Qiongtai Academy has been a place for Hainanese people to study and pass the imperial examinations since its inception. It is now the site of Qiongtai Normal School and a famous scenic spot in Hainan.

When Qiongtai Academy was first established, it only had one pavilion and two courtyards, few books, and simple facilities. After several expansions, it became a large academy with complete dormitories and a large collection of books. The academy now has three courtyards, which is a typical Lingnan architectural layout.
