The Little Mermaid is a world-famous bronze statue located in the northeast of Copenhagen city center. Long Beach Park Langelinie, sculpted by Danish sculptor Edward Ericsson based on Andersen's fairy tale "The Little Mermaid", was completed on the Langelinie waterfront in 1913 and has a history of more than 80 years. It is regarded as a symbol of Copenhagen and attracts countless tourists every year.

The Little Mermaid is the protagonist of the fairy tale The Little Mermaid written by Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen in 1837. She is the youngest daughter of the Sea King. When she was 15, a prince's ship ran aground and sank. She saved the prince and fell in love with him. But the prince had already been engaged to another woman and left her. However, the infatuated Little Mermaid still sat on the rocks by the sea day after day, waiting for the prince to return.
Mermaid Statue It was funded by Carl Jacobsen, the founder of New Carlsberg Brewery, and created by Danish sculptor Edward Ericson. It was cast based on Andersen's fairy tale "The Daughter of the Sea".
In the nearly 100 years since the statue was completed, it has suffered misfortunes many times: in 1961, someone painted a bra on the "Mermaid" with white paint; in 1963, the mermaid's entire body was painted red; in 1964, the statue's head was "cut off" for the first time; fortunately, the sculptor Erickson kept the mold and recast a head; in the early morning of July 22, 1984, the "Mermaid's" right arm was sawed off, and that night two young men surrendered to the police, who charged them with vandalism; in 1990, someone tried to steal the head but failed; on January 5, 1998, the head of the "Mermaid" statue was stolen again, but fortunately it was recovered soon after.
Today, the mermaid has become a symbol of Copenhagen and Denmark. Every year, tens of thousands of tourists travel to Denmark to see the "Little Mermaid".
