The annual "Desert Oasis and Thousand and One Nights International Festival" in Tozeur was founded in 1976. It was originally named "Desert Oasis Festival" and has been held for more than 30 sessions. Later, in order to avoid conflicts with the "International Sahara Festival" in Douz, the President of Tunisia decided in 1987 that November 9-12 of each year would be the "Desert Oasis and Thousand and One Nights International Festival" in Tozeur, and November 12-14 would be the "Sahara National Tourism Day", and the closing ceremony of the former would be the opening ceremony of the latter.
