Since ancient times, the small town of Tivoli, where the Villa d'Este is located, has attracted Roman dignitaries to build villas here to escape the hot summer with its pleasant climate and green mountains and clear waters. The Villa d'Este was built during the Renaissance. It is said that when Cardinal Ippolito d'Este, a member of the Este family from Ferrara, failed in the election of the Pope, a monastery located on the original site of the villa was awarded to him. In 1550, after he became the chief executive of Tivoli, he invited the great Italian garden designer Ligorio to design and build the villa for him. He continued to improve it for nearly a century. The entire manor was built on the mountain, and the artificial buildings in the garden were cleverly integrated with the natural beauty. The exquisite water conservancy design is even more commendable.

Villa main building The building is on the edge of the plateau, and the garden behind it is built on a steep hillside and is divided into eight layers, with a height difference of 50 meters between each layer.
