Lake Ashi is the core area of Hakone tourism. It is located to the west of Hakone Town and at the southern foot of Mount Komagata. The lake area is 690 hectares, the lake depth is 723 meters, and the length of the lake is 17.5 kilometers. It is a volcanic lake formed by volcanic activity more than 4,000 years ago. It is the most charming tourist attraction in Hakone. Lake Ashi is backed by Mount Fuji, and the lake and mountains complement each other. How to get there:
1. Departing from Atami, there are buses from Atami to Hakone Town every hour (operated by Izu-Hakone Bus). One way trip takes about 60 minutes and costs 1,150 yen. The Hakone Free Pass cannot be used on the Izu-Hakone Bus.
2. Departing from Gotemba, there are two buses every hour from Gotemba to the northern and eastern shores of Lake Ashi. (Odakyu Expressway bus operation). One-way trip from Gotemba to Togendai takes about 30 minutes and costs 989 yen. The Hakone Free Pass can be used.
3. Depart from Tokyo and take the Odakyu train from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. After getting off the station, transfer to the mountain tram bound for Gora at the platform. Arrive at Gora and transfer to the cable car to Mount Soun. After 9 minutes, you will arrive at Mount Soun, where you can take the cable car to the terminal, Togendai. This is where the boat dock for visiting Lake Ashi is docked.
