Maqu is the transliteration of the Tibetan word "Yellow River". Maqu County is the only county in the country named after the mother river of the Chinese nation. The Yellow River originates from Bayan Har Mountain in Qinghai, flows through Qinghai, flows into Maqu and then turns back to Qinghai. In Maqu County The territory winds for 433 kilometers, forming the prestigious "First Bend of the Yellow River in the World". The 11th Panchen Lama once left an inscription for it "The First Bend of the Yellow River in the World - The birthplace of Gesar is prosperous".
