Hainan University is the only comprehensive key university co-built by the province and the ministry in Hainan Province, and one of the key universities of the national "211 Project". The school is located in Haikou, a national historical and cultural city. It is a university co-built by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture and Hainan Province. It is a university in the National Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program and a Chinese Government Scholarship Receiving University. It is the only university in Hainan Province with national key disciplines, doctoral authorization points, postdoctoral workstations, and the qualification of recommending graduate students without examination.

Hainan University is a provincial comprehensive key university formed in 2007 by merging the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture and the former Hainan University: the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture (formerly known as "South China College of Tropical Crops") was founded in 1958. It was established under the personal care of Premier Zhou Enlai to serve the country's major strategies. It is a distinctive agricultural university with rubber and tropical agriculture as its main focus. The former Hainan University was founded in 1983 and is a provincial comprehensive key university with a relatively complete discipline and professional system in Hainan Province.
Hainan University currently has three campuses: Haidian, Chengxi and Danzhou. Haidian Campus The main campus covers an area of more than 5,100 acres, with a building area of 830,000 square meters. The library has a collection of more than 3.3 million books, a gymnasium, Athletic field , swimming pools, basketball courts, volleyball courts, tennis courts and other complete venue service facilities.
