Lanzhou University is the only national key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education in Northwest China, and one of the key universities in the national "985 Project" and "211 Project". It is one of the 56 universities and 32 vice-ministerial universities approved by the Ministry of Education to have a graduate school, and a famous university that is a key construction project of the national "111 Project" and "Mount Everest Project".

Lanzhou University is located in the hinterland of the mainland, on the upper reaches of the Yellow River, and is an important city in the northwest. It is a beautiful city with a profound historical and cultural heritage, and a place where multi-ethnic cultures converge. The school campus covers an area of 3,828 acres and has Panxuan Road Campus , Yuzhong Campus , Medical Campus There are six campuses including the First Branch, the Second Branch and the Third Branch, and three hospitals including the First Hospital, the Second Hospital and the Stomatological Hospital.
Lanzhou University was founded in 1909 and was formerly known as Gansu Law School, Gansu Public Law School, Lanzhou Sun Yat-sen University, Gansu University, Provincial Gansu College, National Gansu College, and National Lanzhou University. The school began as Gansu Law School in 1909, expanded into Lanzhou Sun Yat-sen University in 1928, and established as National Lanzhou University in 1946. In 1949, National Lanzhou University was renamed Lanzhou University, which is still used today.
Lanzhou University has a complete range of disciplines with distinct characteristics, covering 12 disciplines. There are 8 national key disciplines, 2 national key discipline cultivation disciplines, and 27 provincial key disciplines. There are 2 national key laboratories, 5 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 1 key open laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture, 2 key research bases of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, 5 key laboratories of Gansu Province, 1 key laboratory of Gansu Province (cultivation base), 4 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 1 engineering research center of Gansu Province, and 1 Sino-German Research Center of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
