Shanxi Geological Museum was officially opened on May 18, 2014, International Museum Day. The predecessor of Shanxi Geological Museum was the Geological Museum of Shanxi Geological Department founded in 1960. It was later renamed Shanxi Geological and Mineral Bureau Geological and Mineral Exhibition Hall and Shanxi Geological and Mineral Museum. The foundation stone of the new museum was laid on March 1, 2007 and completed in 2014. It was named Shanxi Geological Museum. A special museum for the education of land, resources, national conditions and national policies, and popularization of mineral resources and earth science knowledge. It is one of the “Six Major Projects” of social welfare undertakings in Shanxi Province.

The new Shanxi Geological Museum is located on the west bank of Fenhe River in Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, southwest of Yifen Bridge, adjacent to Shanxi Museum, with a total construction area of ​​approximately 31,000 square meters. The themed display consists of four parts: Traveling Through Time and Space, Ancient Species, Treasures from the Earth, and Treasures from the World, which respectively display Shanxi Province’s geological history, biological evolution, mineral resource endowments, and mineral and rock essences. Most of the exhibits are found locally in Shanxi Province, such as the Stegosaurus and Yungangosaurus fossils discovered in Zuoyun County, the Tarbosaurus maxillary and dentary fossils discovered in Tianzhen County, and the Great Labial Rhinoceros fossil discovered in Xing County. . In particular, the Shanxicrocodile fossil discovered in Ji County is currently the only one in the world, which provides an important basis for the study of the Chinese Kenshin fauna in the Middle Triassic. Another important exhibit, the "Nugget Gold" weighing 425 grams, is called "the first gold in North China" by experts, and its formation and discovery process are also full of legend.

Tour route:

Enter the entrance foyer on the east side of the building from Binhe West Road, and reach the exhibition space on the 4th floor through the vertical transportation system for a rotating tour. The circular shape formed by the spiral platform exhibition space is long and flat, leaving sufficient creative space for displaying the grand natural geological content, and will also create a new and unique visiting environment for the audience to visit the museum.
