In 1381 (the fourteenth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty), King Zhu Xi of the Jin Dynasty (the third son of Zhu Yuanzhang), in order to commemorate his mother, Empress Xiao Cigao, sent his father-in-law, Yongping Marquis Xie Cheng, to ask Zhu Yuanzhang, the Taizu of the Ming Dynasty, for permission to build a building on the old site of the White Horse Temple. The (expansion) new temple was supervised by Yuan Hong, the commander of the right guard. It was completed in 1391 (the 24th year of Hongwu) and took 8 years. The King of Jin inscribed it as "Chongshan Temple". The Dabei Hall is the main building of the temple and the most complete and standard Ming Dynasty wooden building in Taiyuan. The upper part is a hilltop with double eaves and brackets and five pavilions, giving it a solemn beauty. The hall is open and bright. From the inner pillars, beams and flat foundations, all are painted in the gold and green colors commonly used in the palace, giving people a sense of magnificence and elegance everywhere.
