Attractions distribution:
The Tower of London was originally a defensive castle built by William I in the 11th century in order to control the entire city of London. It was then expanded and renovated by two generations of monarchs and became a royal palace. The last ruler to live in it as a palace was James I (1566-1625) more than 400 years ago. In the 13th century, it became a prison for upper-class prisoners, and thus a phrase "sent to the Tower" was created, meaning "imprisoned". Elizabeth I was imprisoned here for a period of time during the reign of her half-sister Mary I. Today, with the invention of artillery, the castle has gradually lost its military function and has become a cultural monument and national collection.
