Yunnan University is one of the earliest comprehensive universities established in western China. Yunnan University is located at No. 2 Cuihu North Road, Kunming City, Yunnan Province. It was formerly the private Donglu University founded in December 1922. It began enrolling students in April 1923. In 1934, the school was reorganized into Provincial Donglu University, and in 1934 it was renamed Provincial Yunnan University. In 1938, Yunnan University was changed from provincial to national. In 1946, the British "Concise Encyclopedia Britannica" listed Yunnan University as one of China's fifteen world-famous universities. In 1958, Yunda University was decentralized to the Yunnan Provincial Government from the Ministry of Education. In 1996, Yunnan University became one of the key universities under the national “211 Project” during the “Ninth Five-Year Plan” period.
