Hengshan Bell Tower Travel Guide

Hengshan Ringing Tower, formerly known as Hongmen Temple Ringing Tower, according to the "Hengshan County Chronicle" records: "The Ringing Tower was built during the Taiding Period of the Yuan Dynasty (1324-1328)." It has a history of more than 800 years. It is the only Yuan Dynasty pagoda in Shaanxi. It was named because there were wind chimes on the tower when the tower was built. The sound of the bells was heard for a long time when the wind blew. There is a door opening in the lower part of the tower, and the murals in the inner chamber are relatively complete and exquisite. There are 22 existing portraits, mainly showing scenes of Arhats worshiping Buddha. The backgrounds of the figures in the murals all have a halo, but the halos vary in size and form. There is also a "bridal sedan" enshrined in the tower, which looks like the Jewish Ark of the Covenant. Nowadays, the bells on the tower have long disappeared. People can only rely on these remaining murals and the tower body to imagine the ringing and clear sound of the bells in those days. Hengshan Bell Tower is located on the red rock one kilometer southwest of Tawan Town, Hengshan County, Shaanxi Province.
