Introduction to the Three Holy Temples: The Huayan Sect got its name from the fact that it was established based on the teachings of the Huayan Sutra. Shi Fazang, the third ancestor of Huayan, was bestowed the title of Master Xianshou by the empress Wu Zetian, so the Huayan Sect was also called the Xianshou Sect. In addition, because "the origin of the Dharma Realm" is the starting point of this sect's theory, it is also called the Dharma Realm Sect. The lineage of the Huayan Sect is the "Five Patriarchs of Huayan", namely Dushun--Zhiyan--Fazang--Chengguan--Zongmi. The actual founder of Huayan Sect is Fazang, Du Shun and Zhiyan are the ideological pioneers of Huayan Sect. Chengguan and Zongmi advocate the integration of Huayan Sect and Zen, advocate the unity of teaching and Zen, and further develop the theory of Huayan Sect. After Zongmi, it happened that Tang Wuzong destroyed Buddhism, and Huayan Sect began to decline, but there were successors since the Tang and Song Dynasties.
