Introduction to Lower Mesa: The rock pillar "Liberty Cap" at the bottom of the hillside of Lower Mesa is about 11 meters high. It was named because it resembles the cap worn by patriotic soldiers during the French Revolutionary War. It is the sediment of hot spring activity.
