Introduction to the Astronomical Clock Tower: The Astronomical Clock Tower (Zytgloggeturm) is located at the main crossroads of the old city. Built in 1530, it is the oldest clock tower in Europe and a landmark building in Bern.
The bell tower itself is part of the west gate of the 13th-century old city wall. The big clock above was built in the 16th century. The bottom of the big clock displays the daily time, week, month, as well as constellations and moon phases. The time begins to chime 4 minutes before the hour, attracting tourists passing by to stop and watch.
