Scenic spot introduction:

Sakya Monastery is known as the "Second Dunhuang" for its numerous precious cultural relics. It is the main temple of the Sakya sect of Tibetan Buddhism. "Sakya" is a transliteration of Tibetan, meaning gray-white soil. Sakya Monastery is located in Sakya Town, Sakya County, Shigatse Prefecture, about 160 kilometers southwest of Shigatse City. In 1073 AD (the sixth year of Xining in the Northern Song Dynasty), Kun Gongcuo Jiebu (1034-1102), a descendant of the Tibetan noble Kun family, discovered that the soil on the south side of Benbo Mountain was white and shiny, showing auspicious signs. He immediately funded the construction of Sakya Monastery, and gradually formed the Sakya sect. Sakya Monastery used red, which symbolizes Manjusri Bodhisattva, white, which symbolizes Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and blue, which symbolizes Vajrapani Bodhisattva, to paint the temple walls, so the Sakya sect is also commonly known as the "Flower Sect".

Travel Guide

travelling guideline:

Sakya Monastery holds many religious activities every year, among which the largest and most unique ones are the summer and winter Vajra Dances of Sakya Monastery. The summer dance is held in the seventh month of the Tibetan calendar, and the winter dance begins on the 19th day of the eleventh month of the Tibetan calendar. During the dance, the dancers wear masks of the guardian deities of Sakya Monastery and various spirit animals. The dance uses simple storylines to vividly reflect the basic content of the Tibetan Buddhism Tantric dance of killing demons. Every year when these two ceremonies come, thousands of monks and lay people from near and far rush to Sakya Monastery to worship and pray that the dance can bring happiness and auspiciousness to the world.
