Introduction to the monument: In the center of the Grote Market, there is a bronze statue monument. It is the symbol of the city of Antwerp and also symbolizes Antwerp's courageous struggle and perseverance. Most citizens of Antwerp believe that the city's name comes from the Dutch word "handwerpen". The sculpture shows Brabo throwing the giant's broken hand into the Scheldt River (SCHEIDE), which is also considered to be the graceful bow. A sign that the Scheldt River is back free and flowing.
