Introduction to the City Hall: The Red City Hall (Rotes Rathaus) is located near Alexanderplatz in Mitte. It was built between 1861 and 1869 in the Northern Italian Renaissance style. After World War II, the Red City Hall became the office of the East Berlin Municipal Government; after the reunification of the two Germanys, it became the office of the Berlin Municipal Government. In the nearby Place de la Marne stands the statues of Marx and Engels left over from the East German period.
