Introduction to the Natural History Museum: The National Museum of Natural History was founded in 1889. It belongs to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences together with the Archaeological Museum. It is the largest and oldest museum of its kind in the Balkan Peninsula. Exhibits include more than 400 mammal specimens, more than 1,200 species of birds, hundreds of insects and other invertebrates, and samples of a quarter of the world's minerals.
