Introduction to the former site of the French Consulate: After the Sino-Japanese Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1898, the Western powers set off a frenzy to carve up China. After agreement with the Qing government, the French government established a consulate in Chongqing in March 1896 and appointed Hass, the former deputy consul in Hankou, as the first consul in Chongqing. The consulate was located in Erxian Temple in the city and later moved to Consul Lane. At that time, all affairs in Sichuan, Guizhou, Gansu, Xinjiang, Qinghai, and Tibet were under his jurisdiction. In 1902, French naval officer Hurst led a survey team on a French warship to establish a French naval barracks on the south bank of Chongqing. The French Embassy later used the barracks for its offices. In September 2000, the Chongqing Municipal People's Government announced that the old site was a Chongqing municipal cultural relics protection unit. Since the former site of the French Consulate is located in a demolition area, after discussion, it will be protected and renovated with the theme of a historical neighborhood and will not be demolished.
