Introduction to the Sanguinaires: The Iles Sanguinaires are composed of four small islands extending from the eastern peninsula of Ajaccio. The dark red landscape reflects the unique landform characteristics of Corsica.
The archipelago was used for short-term isolation of fishermen returning from Africa in the early 19th century. Many sentries were deployed at the entrance of the bay. It is now designated as a nature reserve and is prohibited from entering the island. Tourists can view the island from a distance from the Genoa Tower on the peninsula. The scenery is especially beautiful under the setting sun.
